Dog Days of Summer and Swimming with Boots
August is the hottest month in this part of the world. Trying to stay cool can be a challenge when you grow up without access to a swimming pool or clean river. Being young and therefore enterprising and stupid, my brother Rick and I decided one HOT day that we were going swimming even if it meant we had to walk five miles to Keyser's, an old quarry that had evolved into a series of large ponds. We also figured that we would take our dog Boots.
Boots was a mutt, a mix between Lab and Terrier, and who knows what else. He was also a very good natured dog and loved to get out for a walk. We figured that Boots wouldn't mind the 5 mile hike in the sun and heat, and anyway, after we had the collar on him, what choice did he have? Well, we all started off on our venture, and after pulling on his leash and literally choking himself for five minutes or so, he calmed down and I guess he realized that he was in for a longer hike this time around.
After walking for an hour or so, we got to our destination and looked forward to a cooling dip. Keyser's was a treacherous body of water in which many people had drowned. You could be in three feet of water, take another step, and all of a sudden you were in water over your head. Needless to say, you had to be very careful swimming in this body of water. To offer us some sense of protection we noticed an old skid lying there, and figured we could use it as a flotation device that we could swim to if either one of us got into trouble.
We cast off our shoes, and pushed the skid out into the water in front of us. We waded out to the deeper water and called for Boots to come on out to us. He stood on the shore barking furiously, but no matter how many times we called for him, he wouldn't venture into the water. A Lab that doesn't like water? It didn't seem right that we were enjoying the water and he wasn't, so we figured we had to get the old boy out here some way. Rick said "let's put him on the skid and push him out here"!
Sure enough, we pushed the skid back to the shore, and I picked him up and put him on the skid and we slowly pushed the skid out into the water. When we got out to the deeper water, we stopped and let Boots sort of float there, and we swam off a ways. He continued to bark loudly, but still wouldn't get in the water. I said to Rick, "all dogs can swim right"? He said "yea, I think so". "Well, I added, we're going to find out". We swam back to the skid and he and I got on both sides and started rocking the skid. Before long we tipped it enough to cause Boots to go into the water. He immediately started doing the old dog paddle, and swam straight for the shore.
Once there, he shook himself off, and started barking again. We figured crazy old dog, and thought well, let's try it again. So, we went back in, put him on the skid, and pushed him out into the water again. Sure enough, we would tip the skid and Boots would go into the water, swim back to shore, and repeat the process again. We must have done this at least ten times. I guess he just couldn't tread water very well.
After being out there for a couple of hours, we grudingly decided it was time to go since we were both getting hungry and had brought nothing to eat. We leashed Boots up and started the walk home. It seemed like it took much longer to get home then get there, but we eventually made it.
The next morning my mother woke me up and said "something's wrong with Boots, he can barely walk". Sure enough, when I looked at him, he was struggling just to take a step. After thinking about it for a short while, and wondering what could be wrong, the thought popped into my mind, it's from swimming. His muscles had tightened up on him just like they would with anyone who had been exercising furiously. After a few days, he was walking normal again, but I must say it was humorous watching him walking about during that time. If they made dog crutches, he could have used them for sure.
Boots has long since left the scene, but I think of that hot day in August and swimming with my brother and Boots and can't help but smile when I think of the reluctant swimmer... Boots.

Running a web hosting company is not as easy as it seems, in fact if I had to choose again maybe I would choose swimming with sharks rather than being a web host.
The learning curve for me was huge, so I thought I would share with you what I learned. Firstly you'll need to find a good webhosting company. I'm not going to pretend to recommend anyone in this article; you just need to search hard to find someone that has the right technology, the right bandwidth and the right support.
I ended up choosing a dedicated windows 2003 server with 250 Gb of bandwidth and 80 Gb of hard disk space. I can remote desktop to this server at any time to make any modifications I need which provides great flexability. But with this flexability comes complexity.
Your customers will expect the following from you:
- POP3 email and webmail
- Web site hosting
- FTP access
- Efficient billing
- Excellent support
- Statistics
Providing all of this is not easy and for the important things like statistics or email it's worth paying to get the right tools. If these things break then your customers yell and scream until their fixed.
For email I selected SmarterMail from SmarterTools. This is a great tool that provides POP3 and IMAP support and webmail. It integrates with virus software and SPAM software (with a little work) however it's reliable and easy to use.
I choose to stick with SmarterTools for Statistics and Support software also. These tools are not the cheapest available however they offer a great user experience. I love the support tool especially, and so do my clients. They can send an email to support@yadayada.com and the support request automatically gets routed to the right person who then gets an email. The customer can manage the whole process just by replying to emails which makes it really easy for them. I manage the whole process through a simple web interface and can route requests to the right people responsible for fixing the problem.
The stats software is farily standard, it does have some nice graphics which customers like, and it's built to manage multiple domain names and sites which is perfect for a web host.
Billing is something that took a while to get sorted. Initially I just managed everything in an excel spreadsheet but that very quickly become too hard to manage. I then developed an Access database to help, which I quickly outgrew also. The main problem I found was that both of these solutions needed a human (me) to actually make them work. I needed something that was going to be completely automated. Just on a side note, most of my customers are small businesses looking for some hand-holding; as such they are not the sort of customer to 'sign-up' on a website for hosting. In fact that's not the product we really offer anyway.
Today I am running with an open source billing system called phpCOIN. This software allows me to set up recurring invoices that automatically get sent as they roll around. The new version to be released this year will actually deliver a PDF email which I'm sure my customers will like even more. This filled a huge void.
The final part in making all of this work was learning all about DNS. When I started this business I understood the concepts but had never actually made it work. I know what a DNS server did, but not really how. This is the one thing that can really screw you around if you get it wrong, because your customers are the first people on the phone when their website is down or the email is broken.
I would recommend a great deal of research in this area to ensure you are not in over your head. Once you learn about A records and MX records however, it really quite simple. There are many sites offering advice in this area, and I would head to some forums to get your questions answered quickly.
So am I happy to doing this? To be honest I love it! Running this system gives me the power to built websites on the fly, not only for my customers but for myself and my family also. And I know that the only person I need to rely on is me.

I just finished my first novel, Shades of Betrayal, and felt a rush of giddy excitement at the prospect of being a REAL writer. I had a vague idea that I would need an agent, so I went to a search engine and typed: Literary Agents. My search returned thousands upon thousands of results, and as I surfed from page to page, I quickly realized getting an agent was not going to be an easy undertaking. Most would not accept unsolicited queries, or queries from previously unpublished authors. I wondered if it would just be easier to contact publishers directly, in essence acting as my own agent. My bubble quickly burst when I found very few publishers willing to accept unagented queries. I was disappointed but not deterred.
In retrospect, I wish I had begun my search for information with these words: Writer Beware. These words would have saved me from surfing in shark infested waters. The sharks got me, but thankfully it was just a little nibble, they didnt tear off my entire leg. Here are just a few tips to keep you safe from the sharks posing as agents and/or publishers:
Regardless of what they call them: Reading Fees, Evaluation Fees, Handling Fees, Sliding Fees, Publishing Fees, Marketing Fees, or Adjunct Services, FEES = money leaving your pocket and going into theirs. I paid an agent to set up a web site where my book would be promoted in junction with submissions to various publishers. I wanted to believe my dream was coming true, so I gagged my inner critic and stuck her in a dark corner. Paying up front fees just doesnt pass the common sense test. Fee-charging violates the basic premise of the author-agent relationship: a shared financial interest in the sale of the author's manuscript. (Writers Beware, p.2)
Referrals can be made for editing, illustrations, cover art or publishing by the agent, who in turn receives a kickback. Avoid agents that require use of outside companies as a condition of representation.
Contests may be used to lure unsuspecting writers to an agent or vanity press. A new writer, eager for acceptance and validation, is especially vulnerable if their writing is favorably judged. This adds fuel to their belief that if only they had readers, their work would be appreciated. With this newfound confidence, a writer may decide to bypass traditional publishing to publish and distribute their own work. This is a viable alternative for some: however, there are plenty of con artists waiting to take your money.
